Biodesign : Nature + Science + Creativity

bio design

Once the concrete cracks, the bacteria will then secrete limestone, filling the cracks. The Shi Ling Bridge was inspired by the optimised curvilinear geometry which locks in rigorousness with corrugation. By including perforations, the design can be lighter which reduces the amount of material used to create the design thus also its carbon footprint is reduced. The result is a bridge that does not look rigid and blends into the natural environment well.

If your study involves the administration of medications, lab draws and other diagnostic tests you may consider the creation of an orderset in Epic EMR. This will help you to easily place the orders with consistency and accuracy along with communication orders to the Care Team/ Nurses. For help with the orderset creation/ to know more details, please email the Stanford Medicine Children's Research Informatics team. projects

The rise of creating projects with forms inspired by nature has become common, but design with the complexity of the natural structures found in nature could only happen once the technology caught up. A team of undergraduate design students won two prizes at the Biodesign Challenge, an educational program and competition, in 2018 for the Sorbit Diaper, a fully compostable diaper made solely from biobased materials. This alternative could be a solution to the 3.5 million tons of used diapers in landfills, where they can take up to 500 years to decompose.

The bioluminescent dress shown above comes from a research project by designer Victoria Geaney, and University of Cambridge academics Anton Kan and Bernardo Pollak. They explore the unusual environments the bacteria could be cultivated in, and whilst the dress was the unintentional product, it has added to the voices challenging the definition of what art and science, and design and nature, could mean. Comparable to the Shi Ling Bridge, it could only be developed through an experimental process of scientific analysis, coding, and material research. The design follows characteristics from nature including ‘self-organisation, adaptivity, variation, redundancy and low-energy syntheses’. (Liu, 2020) The process of identifying what factors to replicate consisted of scanning and analysing a bird’s nest.

We release OpenCRISPR-1 publicly to facilitate broad, ethical usage across research and commercial applications. Selected from hundreds of artworks and designs from BDC, our first book is a compilation of projects and ideas that are influencing the emerging field of biodesign. In their own words, pioneers and BDC alumni explore the future of biodesign and its role in shaping people’s identities, cultures, and relationships with the living environment. Beyond being a primer, the book is a celebration of the first five years of our program and a deep dive into the minds behind biodesign. We are currently sold out of the book—click the button below to be the first to know when it’s available. It can mean creating a relationship between living organisms and the design process or letting nature play an active role in shaping a final product.

The natural world has powerful intelligence and adaptability that we can tap into to create sustainable and, in some cases, even self-repairing designs. Imagine buildings regulating temperatures through passive ventilation inspired by termite mounds, or concrete that acts with the same drainage properties as soil so that flooding doesn’t occur. By tapping into these solutions already developed by nature, biodesigners can adapt to solve the ever-growing challenges of the climate crisis. BDC aims to pioneer, envision, create, and critique transformational applications in biotech.

Finite-element analysis and electrochemical kinetics analyses reveal that such a tree-like microstructure facilitates fast Na+ diffusion and promotes effective stress dissipation. As a result, the Bi MF electrode shows exceptionally high rate capability (338.9 mA h g−1 at 50 A g−1 with a capacity retention of 94.2%) and excellent cycling stability (95.9% capacity retention after 1200 cycles at 1 A g−1). More importantly, by pairing the Bi MF anode with a Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode, the assembled full cell achieves a long cycle life and an inspiring energy density of 132.2 W h kg−1, showing the great potential of the Bi MF anode in sodium-ion full-cells.

This paper explores a collaboration between architecture and biology educators to integrate core concepts of biology with a bio-inspired architectural design process. Bio-inspired design looks to biology for inspiration to expand design thinking, methods, and strategies. Given today’s ever-increasing ecological challenges, designers can benefit from the expertise of biologists and the biological lessons of other species. In this paper, a six-step design process adapted from engineering (Fayemi et al. 2017) is integrated with core concepts of biology, including the ideas of function, biodiversity, and evolution. This integrated process explores how the concept of function serves as a bridge between human challenges and different areas of biology, while simultaneously helping to overcome the limits of simply copying biological traits. Tools are offered to explore biodiversity and the tree of life for biological models that can inform design ideas, stressing the importance of sampling different parts of the tree, as diverse organisms often solve a given problem in different ways.

Bio-Design and Manufacturing (BDM) is an interdisciplinary journal focused on Advanced Manufacturing, Biomaterials, Tissue and Organ Engineering, Medical and Diagnostic Devices and Applications, Bioproduct Design, etc. "If our relationship with nature is broken, this book makes us hope that perhaps we will be able to fix it from within." "high-minded eye candy and environmental battle cry...Myers is a deft, often-thoughtful guide. He has an unobtrusive writing style that eschews the 'gee whiz!' response that bleeding-edge design typically inspires."

Raymond DuBois, an internationally renowned physician-scientist whose research has advanced the understanding of the molecular basis for the prevention of colon cancer, was named executive director of Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute. Using everything you’ve learned about the need — including your team’s unique insights — you’re ready to generate and screen a wide range of solutions to select the one with the greatest likelihood of making it into patient care. CBID affiliated faculty perform fundamental and translational research in biology, engineering, and design. Elements of biodesign can be seen in a vast range of design areas, but we’ve broken down three key aspects to help you understand and apply its potential. Amy has since become the leading personal consultant to women afflicted with hair loss in the U.S….

“This project was inspired by the universe of unseen organisms that inhabit our bodies,” author William Myers says of Julia Lohmann’s mural Co-Existence exhibited in 2009 in London. We now need to create scale so that biomaterials can become a regular part of our supply chain. Investment, policies that restrict harmful materials and work like WRAP’s push to supermarkets will all be key. "The biggest innovations of the twenty-first century will be the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning." Amy tried every medical and alternative treatment imaginable for Alopecia without success. With Amy’s guidance, you’ll discover not only the ideal comfortable wig that suits your style using a simple process that ensures you get the perfect look you’re after, but all the ways to live a normal life in “Alternative Hair”. Since its formation Biodesign has attracted over $930 million in funding from grants as well as philanthropic and industry sources. The Italian artist Giuliano Mauri planted 80 hornbeam trees amid columns of bundled branches in Arte Sella, a sculpture garden in northern Italy. The trees inch up the columns to form Cattedrale Vegetale, a Gothic cathedral complete with naves. She cultivates bacteria in vats of sugary green tea and then harvests the cellulose that forms on the mixture’s surface. CBID promotes vigorous exchange between students, researchers, and industry through training, networking and academic-industrial partnerships. CBID offers K12 curricular materials, undergraduate courses and a certificate, and a rich environment for graduate education.

Products made from fossil fuel derivatives and plastics currently have a linear life cycle; the only destination for them after usage is the landfill. Scolese graduated from the University at Buffalo in 1978 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer engineering and started his career at NASA in 1987. He worked at the Goddard Flight Center until 2001 when he moved to NASA’s Washington D.C. He held a number of different positions and managed the oversight for NASA’s Space Science Flight Program and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
